Whatever attribute you give to the heart, we know that heart health is important in overall health of our cells, tissues, and other organs.  More than ever, we are seeing the effects of an unhealthy heart.  Because people are developing conditions of the heart including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), irregular heart rhythms, and heart failure, we must consider lowering cholesterol naturally. So what choices can be made to maintain a healthy heart?

To understand how the heart works the way it does, we must look at cholesterol. Cholesterol is a natural substance that is produced by the body and is essential for optimal health.

You may be thinking, “Of course, you must have low cholesterol to have a healthy heart.  I can lower cholesterol naturally or by taking a prescription drug.” But low cholesterol does not equal healthy.

Cholesterol is essential to life and found in every cell.  Many processes in the body from nerve function and hormone synthesis, to vitamin D production depends on cholesterol. If cholesterol is too low, this will lead to problems in health, including the heart.  But we must have appropriate ratios of HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, and total cholesterol.

There are ways to maintain and lower cholesterol naturally.

The first thing to note is that cholesterol works synergistically with two other nutrients : sulfur and vitamin D.   Cholesterol requires these nutrients to make important substances the heart uses for normal function.  Sulphur is used in the presence of cholesterol to make cholesterol sulfate. This is mainly formed from regular sun exposure of the skin. Once made, cholesterol sulfate is then transported to the heart and all cells by way of the blood stream.  Once in the heart cells, the molecule helps to power the pumping action of the organ.

Taking these thing into consideration, There are two important things to think about to maintain and lower cholesterol naturally. First, consider adding sulfur-containing foods like fresh garlic, seafood, and cruciferous vegetables to your diet. This will provide your body with the needed sulfur to produce cholesterol sulphate. Plus, these foods taste great and add variety to your meals.  Second, get appropriate sun exposure. This helps with the formation of healthy cholesterol and vitamin D, helping you and your heart stay healthy naturally.

Increase Your Range of Motion

As part of our complimentary recommendations, our doctors often recommend implementing a series of structurally rehabilitating stretches. It is important to note, these stretches are begun only after the area of concern is stabilized and ready for stretching.  Even more important to realize is these rehabilitating stretches are limited in their effectiveness for decreasing stiffness if not coupled with structural-fortifying adjustments to correct shifts in the spine.

But we have good news for you, too! New research is changing the long-held perception of stretching routines.  There is new evidence showing that stretches can begin to positively affect range of motion in only 30 seconds! The old thinking of multiple sets of the same stretches is out the door. A study found that a sustained stretch of 30 seconds, once per day, was sufficient to increase your range of motion in a short amount of time.

This is great news for those who loath to stretch throughout the day or simply forget.

Your stiff and sore joints could be helped by incorporating a few minutes per day into your morning routine.  Some stretches we recommend can even be done while brushing your teeth or taking a shower.

Chiropractic Pain Sources

Synergy is very important in the body. Organs and tissues must work together in order to maintain optimal health and prevent the development of debilitating conditions. Just as a building must have a firm foundation to withstand the elements, so too must the structural basis of the human be sound to ensure normal function is maintained.

Each organ of the body functions because of nerve input from the brain stem. This is the area of the brain that controls your heart, breathing, and digestion, among other things. But if an imbalance is present in an organ, it can cause certain pain conditions to persist.

The Organ Connection

One such result of an organ imbalance is called the “viscero-somatic reflex.”   This simply means that an organ with a deficiency is sending irritating signals to the spinal nerves and up to the brain. Your brain interprets this correctly as pain but misinterprets what is causing the pain. The brain instead senses the pain is from another source.

A common example of this reflex is the sensation noted during the onset of a heart attack.   Pain or discomfort is commonly felt in their left arm or jaw. Intense pressure on the chest is another sign.  The explanation behind this phenomenon is because the nerves of the heart share common origins with the nerves of the jaw and arm. There are less extreme ways this occurs as well.

Chiropractic Improves Antioxidant Activity

Antioxidants are a big buzzword today. If you happen to do any causal reading about health and healing, you will likely see the term mentioned. DNA is the genetic blueprints of our cells, providing information needed for growth and repair. Housed in the center of the cell, they ensure that the cell functions properly. DNA, however, is susceptible to damage from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Free radicals are why antioxidants are needed in the body. Without them, free radicals react with healthy cells and cause mutations. Mutations prevent important activity, one of which is DNA repair.

Through exposure to things in the environment and metabolic activity, our bodies experience stress. A properly functioning cell is able to adapt and eliminate stress from free radicals through repair mechanisms contained within the DNA. Serum thiols in blood samples are a way to measure this DNA repair activity.

Maintaining a healthy percentage of body fat is an important component in overall health. With growing concern of obesity in America, it is worth discussing ways to add a spark to your workout to target fat burn. One such way is adding free weight exercises to your current routine.

Free weight exercises help to build lean muscle and burn lots of energy. Lean muscle is important because it burns more energy than fat after a workout. The amount of calories lean muscle burns compared to fat is much higher and increases your metabolism after exercise. Shoulder Pain Palm Coast

Are you or someone you know currently dealing with shoulder pain in Palm Coast or the area?  The experience of a painful shoulder can be caused by different reasons, but they all result in a loss of function and doing the things you love to do on a daily basis.  Whether you’re a professional athlete or mother of two, we all need properly functioning shoulders to perform most every task.   But did you know that our office is specially prepared to diagnose and care for various shoulder conditions?

The shoulder joint is an amazing structure that allows us to reach, cast, stretch, and rotate our arms in every direction.  But when a structural displacement occurs in the joint, for example, the nerves that are within and around the shoulder joint can become compressed and irritated.  This can result in the pain you or your loved one is feeling.

There are other things that can cause shoulder pain as well.  Let’s say you traveled far away from Palm Coast, shoulder pain free, and stayed at a friend’s house.  They were gracious enough to open their doors, but had no proper bed on which to sleep.  No problem, they have a couch with some throw pillows.  WRONG!  The next morning, the shoulder you slept on now is in pain.  But what caused this to happen?

A common cause of shoulder pain is a problem with the alignment of the neck.  If your neck is abnormally aligned to a significant degree, nerves controlling the shoulder that originate from the neck can become irritated and cause referred pain.  This type of pain is due to a problem from a bodily tissue (your neck in this case) that makes you feel pain elsewhere (your shoulder).  This can happen from a heart attack too.  Men who are having a heart attack often develop pain traveling down their arm. Although the arm is in fact healthy, it shares common nerves that tells the brain there is pain in the arm too.

Another possible source of shoulder pain comes from the ribs.  Your rib cage has 12 pairs of ribs, one on each side.  These ribs are very strong and can withstand a lot of pressure.  But the alignment of the ribs can shift due to stress and trauma from various activities.  A hard hit from a game of football or other contact sports can affect a rib’s alignment.   A rib that is structurally displaced from its normal position cannot function correctly.  If a rib’s normal movement is impaired for long enough, a painful rib syndrome can develop.  This pain syndrome, if developed due to an upper rib, can cause referred pain to the shoulder.

A reemerging health trend is beginning to gain popularity in parts of the country.  It’s the idea for new urban and community Fitness Courts that have no mechanical equipment, but instead use gravity as the resistance.  If you like to exercise in Palm Coast, this could be you new favorite way to spend you workout outdoors. There are no moving parts to break down, which means these fitness courts last a long time.

This is as basic as it gets.  But sometimes going back to the basics is a great idea.It is aimed at getting more people active while connecting members of the community in new ways.  With people becoming more budget-conscious, some are going back to the roots of exercise and finding a highly effective way of keeping healthy that doesn’t break the bank.

The great thing about these fitness locations are open to everyone to use, fostering community interaction and outdoor physical activity.  Groups can meet at the location and using only body weight, get a fantastic workout that will increase brain and heart function while decreasing risk of disease. An entire family could go to the location and have good, clean fun that will be available at any time of day or season.  Here in Palm Coast, that equals a lot of opportunity for use given the our great climate.

Prenatal Chiropractor and Pregnancy

When talking about health for babies and mothers, you’ve likely heard of the importance of B vitamins, namely B9 or Folate.  A prenatal chiropractor will be able to guide you to making wise decisions in your health for the next 9 months of pregnancy and should know the role folate plays in the development of your child.

Folate plays a vital role in the healthy development of the neural system during and is essential for normal functions.   This includes growing children, women getting chiropractic during pregnancy, and men as well.  It is water-soluble, meaning it becomes active in the body when water is present. Excess folate is then excreted in the urine after being processed by the kidneys. Folate is very important when considering the impact it has on energy production and cell metabolism. When the body uses B vitamins like folate, it allows cells to produce energy needed for an array of different functions in cells and tissues.

The vitamin is actually more like a special enzyme, which allows your own DNA to make amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Proteins are needed for almost every function in the body, one of which is building muscle. As a developing fetus, it helps to ensure proper cell division, and as an adult it prevents you from developing a certain kind of anemia where the cell enlarges due to lack of iron. But did you or your prenatal chiropractor know that there are different sources and qualities of folate?

Folate is typically found in food products in the form of folic acid. If pregnant, a doctor may advise a folic acid supplement. But did you know folic acid is not the same as folate? Folic acid may be chemically altered in the body to become folate, but they have different effects on the body. Folate is a naturally occurring vitamin found in foods like beef liver, leafy green vegetables, and legumes (green beans, black beans, peanuts). Folic acid is a cheap synthetic form of B9 that the government mandated to be added to foods back in 1998. It was done to decrease neural tube defects, and has been very successful in that aspect.

But research is showing that this form is unusable in as much as 45% of the population due to a genetic defect that makes it impossible to convert folic acid to folate. Decreased folate in the body means an increased risk for heart disease, anemia, cancers, and developmental growth problems. One study also showed that high folic acid consumption was linked to cognitive decline later in life.

“So how can this be avoided?” By choosing whole foods with folate, you cannot overdose on this vitamin because naturally occurring foods with folate have balanced levels and contain other synergistic nutrients to help the body make energy as efficient as possible. When at the store, the only way to know what form you’re eating is by reading the label.
